Introductory Slides

Introduction to Matlab, also handwriting.mat, handwritingx.dat and mat_prod.mto go with it.

I have used Matlabs publishing features to create a webpage version of the introduction which demonstrates some of the features strengths and weaknesses.

An introduction to the fda package is now up. The html version is also available.

To avoid having to download several files from functionaldata.org, I have put a zipp-ed version of the fda Matlab package online.

Homework 1 is now out and due Tuesday, Feb 27. You will need to load montreal.mat if you wish to answer some of the computational questions.

Please note an error in Question 1 of Homework 1 (thanks Haim!) In the definition of a B-spline the numerator in the second term should be \tau_{i+p+1} - t.

Demonstration of smoothing using the FDA software. You need the vancouver precipitation data as well.

Homework 2 is due Thursday, March 15. You will need sweden.mat for the final question.

Demonstration of bivariate smoothing along with the California Housing Data.

Directions for the class discussion on the Functional ANOVA. This will be based around the article Smoothing Spline Models for Nested and Crossed Samples of Curves by Brumback and Rice, the discussions by Wang and Wahba, Fan and Zhang, Kniep, Lange, and Ramsay and Silverman, and the rejoinder from the authors.

Homework 4 is due Tuesday, May 1. You will need slider.mat and slider.m for the final question.
